Message from Principal Lorow
February is a short but busy month at Roxhill Elementary. We will be celebrating Black History in various ways throughout the month. February 6-10 is Black Lives Matter at School Week and teachers are preparing engaging activities for the students. Jazz Ed will join us on Tuesday February 7th for a special assembly for students in grades 3 - 5. We will also have a special Black History assembly on Friday, February 10th.
Valentine’s Day is Tuesday, February 14th. Teachers will send home a class list so that each child can create a Valentine for every child in their class. Please do not leave any child out. Some teachers may choose to have students make a Valentine card or compliment card in the classroom for each student. Please look for specific information from your child’s teacher about how their class will celebrate. At elementary school Valentine’s day is an opportunity to build community rather than express “love”. Please do not send candy or other treats for Valentine’s. This month also brings the yearly English Language Proficiency testing for students whose first language is other than English. Mid-winter break is scheduled for February 20th thru the 24th and then we are on to March. Whew!
Enrollment, Open House + School Tours
New student enrollment is open for the 2023-24 school year.
Please visit the Seattle Public Schools website for enrollment information and application. If you have a child who will turn 5 years old prior to August 31, 2023, please start the enrollment now. https://www.seattleschools.org/enroll/
Roxhill will be holding an Open House/Tour on Monday, February 6, from 9 - 10am. Please join us at 9:00am to hear and see all about Roxhill Elementary.
Thinking you would like to Volunteer or Chaperone?
At Roxhill, we appreciate having parents/guardians involved in student learning and field trips. If you think you would like to volunteer at Roxhill or chaperone a field trip, and you are not already approved for these activities, please visit the Seattle Public Schools website volunteer page to start the application process. Once you have completed the application, it may take up to 2 weeks to receive approval, so best to do this early and not wait until an event you may miss. Click here Seattle Public Schools > Departments > Volunteer to access applications for renewal and new volunteers. You may also email Audrey Turpaud ahturpaud@seattleschools.org to inquire about your volunteer status.
Transportation help for students on Holden
We have several families in the neighborhood who need help getting their students to school. They live too close to qualify for bus service but too far to walk due to health and mobility issues. If you are able to help walk or drive other students to and/or from school, please email friendsofroxhill@gmail.com. We can connect you directly with families so you can mutually decide if it’s a good fit.
In the long term, we are looking for volunteers to organize a more formal walking bus route on Holden between Delridge and 34th. Learn more about starting a Walking Bus here and email friendsofroxhill@gmail.com if you are interested in getting involved.
Yearbook Committee
Are you looking for a fun way to volunteer with students at the school?
Do you like photography? Do you have graphic design skills? Join the Yearbook committee!
Friends of Roxhill is collaborating with the 5th graders and our fabulous art teacher Ms. Michelle to produce a yearbook that students will treasure for years to come. Got computer skills but aren’t available during the school day? We could use your help with the layouts and design, which can be worked on at home on your own time. Email friendsofroxhill@gmail.com to help us with this fun and creative project.
We are also looking for donations of digital point and shoot cameras for students to take pictures with. Please include battery chargers, memory cards and manuals, if you have them. You can drop off at the front office for Ms. Michelle.
Neighborcare Health Vaccine Clinic
Neighborcare Health at Roxhill will hold a walk-in vaccine event on Monday, February 6 from 8am-4pm.
Families can come to get school-required vaccines. The exemption form will also be available to fill out.
Neighborcare Health is also able to see students for vaccines and other health needs during our regular clinic hours Mondays (8am – 4pm) and Thursdays (8am-3pm).
All services are provided at no cost to all Seattle Public School students. We have medical, mental health, and dental services. Call 206-452-2660 or email aliciaw@neighborcare.org to schedule.
