Message from Principal Lorow

Happy New Year!

We are back in the swing of things. I have been very proud of our students as they have returned from the long break and settled smoothly back into school. There is lots of hard work happening. The kindergarteners will take their first standardized test of reading and math next week with the MAP. Our multilingual students will begin their yearly assessment of English language proficiency later this month. Will we be having our Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly on Friday the 13th. The 4th and 5th graders will be heading out to Garfield High School on Thursday the 12th to see a play. This will be the first in person field trip (other than 5th grade camp) since the pandemic! We are excited for the students as field trips can be such great learning opportunities. I will be meeting with the 4th and 5th graders to discuss behavior expectations on the trip as they will be representing all of Roxhill in the community. I know they will make us proud!

Volunteer Opportunities

All volunteer opportunities that take place on school grounds or field trips will require you to fill out a volunteer application through SPS. Start a new application or check your status as a returning volunteer here.

We are currently looking for volunteers to help with:

  • Set up and maintenance of the Lettuce Grow Hydroponic Farmstand: 3rd graders will be growing vegetables and herbs indoors and need 2 volunteers to help with set up and maintenance. Volunteers will check the pH of the water, add nutrients and harvest plants every week or every other week. No experience necessary! Email friendsofroxhill@gmail.com for more details.

  • Food Bank Pickup for Food Bag Program (Fridays at 9am): Roxhill is continuing the Friday Food Program this year, sending students home with a bag of snacks and easy to prepare food for the weekend. Alicia Wun from Neighborcare needs a volunteer to help with picking up the food from the West Seattle Food Bank each Friday at 9am and delivering it to Roxhill. It involves lifting and carrying about 5-6 boxes. If you are able to stay and help pack the bags, that would be a huge help, but not 100% necessary. Sign up for shifts here.

Want to get more involved with Friends of Roxhill? Fill out our volunteer interest survey to learn more about what we do and how you can help.
